Our school was established in 1983 as Casa Montessori de Vista to provide the opportunity for children, aged 6-12, to develop in enriched learning environments designed around the natural curiosity of the child as well as the child's stages of intellectual, personal, social and motor development.
The teachers and staff are well-qualified and committed to helping each child develop to the best of his/her ability and work well in a community. The Director, Janann Taylor, has taught all levels of Montessori education for the past 20 years.
Classes are multi-level with a teacher-student ratio of 1:12. Lessons are presented to individual or small groups to respond to each child's needs and nurture independence. The environment appeals to the child's interests, which is beneficial to acquiring focus, good attention span and a passion for learning. Classrooms are equipped with materials utilized in the complete Montessori curriculum for Mathematics, Language, Geometry, Geography, History, Botany and Zoology. By "doing", the students become confident, skillful, organized and knowledgeable. Accomplishments of the individuals lead to responsible, caring citizens.
Students also use workbooks to reinforce and enhance learning and to develop thinking and problem-solving skills. The School uses Modern Curriculum Mathematics, EPS Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary, Keys to Geometry, Zaner-Bloser Spelling, Junior Great Books, Mortensen Math and Palmer Handwriting.
Apple Computers are integrated into the curriculum for word-processing, skill development, CD-ROM and online research.
Music and Art Classes are held weekly. Spanish and Physical Education are held bi-weekly. German, held weekly, is an option for students 8-12 years of age.
Students have a one-hour recess each day to eat lunch and enjoy supervised time for play on the central courtyard, field and playground.
Homework is assigned on a regular basis to encourage self-reliance and provide for reinforcement of skills. Homework is intended to meet the individual student's needs and extends learning time with meaningful activities.
Field trips are taken monthly to broaden the child's exposure to science, culture and community.
Students wear a durable and comfortable uniform from Dennis Uniform Company. Uniforms foster a cohesive student body and help focus children's attention on learning.
Our school site creates a wonderful synergy with the Carlsbad Cole Library, Arts Office, City Hall, Fire Department and Olde Carlsbad Village. The Mission Revival architecture of the main building is complemented by a sports field, playground, sports court, theater and kitchen. The library holds a good collection of resource books, fiction and nonfiction. Students often enjoy working on the deck connecting the classrooms.
