Our Plant Kingdom: Environmental Form and Function

Exploring the uses of plants is an interesting and important study for Montessori students starting in Elementary. Brainstorming stimulated ideas of food, shelter, clothing, medicines, furniture, musical instruments, beauty in gardens, recreation and habitat for animals.

Upper level students study Adaptations of Plants and Functions relating to types of stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, as well as forms of growth and reproduction. Fourth level studies the Classification of Plants and then students go deeper into Ecology and Cell Biology.

San Diego Botanical Gardens in 2009-10 San Diego Botanical Gardens in 2009-10 school year brought these studies to life and encouraged journals and research. Here you can share our visit to the Bamboo Garden, Herb Garden, Tropical Rain Forest, Subtropical Fruit Garden and our fun in the Hamilton Children's Garden. We were appreciative of the docents who toured us and inspired by Ruth Baird Larabee who donated the land and also protected the California Quails!
